Dhylan Patel is one of our main characters and he is going be in a black suit throughout our opening sequence. This is because he is going to go to the cemetery to put flowers on the grave of his lost friend. We chose the colour black because it is a dull colour which can symbolise life less. Also it is a very formal colour. Furthermore the black suit can symbolise death and so the colour black links with the mood we are trying to set.

Black Rose Prop
A black rose isn't a real flower, we would like to artificially have one of these made for our opening sequence.
The reason for this is because when Dhylan (a main character) goes to the cemetery, we would like him to put these flowers on Tyler's grave (other main character). We want a black rose because black symbolises death and a rose is usually a loving flower. So we are trying to express both these things just by using a flower. If we are unable to get a black rose, then we shall have to use other flowers that are black. But we prefer if it were a black rose.

Oblivious Presentation
In our groups, we presented our ideas to the class. After each pitch, the groups were given feedback. Our idea was liked by our class mates but we did recieve some constructive feedback that we have taken aboard.
Our main concern is how we are going to find a garve stone with the character name we have chosen which is Tyler Johnson and that people that are around in the cemetery may not enjoy us filming there. We have over come the grave stone crisis as we are going to film the grave stone from the back so the name can't be seen. However, our teacher helped us with our second dilema and told us to be very polite in the cemetery as he doesn't want us to make others feel uncomfortable.
Another concern was about our choice of clothing for our ghost, our class thinks we need to make sure we portray him as a ghost and not a average teenager.
We have taken on board all these points and hope to make our opening sequence better based on this feedback.

Blood Simple Opening Sequence.
The mise-en-scene of the openning shot of the film is worth comenting on. The shot shows a lonely, desolate road; the vaery low angle camera shot gives the impression of the road of the disappearing indefinately into the distance. Nothing but dry scrubland appears either of the road. The only object in shot is a carefully placed piece of worn rubber tyre, pressumably from a blow out, perhaps implying an accident. The existance of this piece of tyres has the effect of adding to the emptiness of the road by emphasising that there is nothing else there. In addition, it indicates that there is rarely much traffic on the road, since otherwise the piece of tyre would have gone.
After 45 seconds of this montage of establishing shots, the Coens cut to two, faint, dots of light, alone in a vast back nothingness: a car. This clearly very isolated car, both the lighting and the longshotgivees the impression. Adding to this sense of isolation are the last words of the voiceover, which we hear as a sound bridge as the cut to this shot is made: "what i know about Texas, and down here, you're on your own".
The car comes rapidly towards the camera before shooting past; it is all shockingly sudden after the quiet and slow peace of the previous 45 seconds. As the car passess the camera the point of view changes and suddenly the audience is looking down from the bonnet of the car as the road races by underneath. The voice over has gone and has been replaced initially by diegetic sound of the car racing past; this added to by the non-diegetic music; a soundtrack which is slightly unsettling, sinister electronic music with medium-paced, heavy drums.
Tha name of the title appears in blue against a black background. Hereafter title (cast & crew names) are superimposed in the same colour and font, over the subsequent shots, generally in unobtrusive positions in areas of blackness in frames.
The Coen cut to inside the car. The point of view is from the back seat, and we see the outlines of two heads, the windscreen-wipers furiosly clearing the driving rain, and occasionally a blinding light of a car in the opposite direction. The darkness, the dreadfull weather, the fact that we don't see the characters faces and they remain mysterious and the uncertainty as to who they are and what there relationship is, all add to the sense of unease. It becomes clear that the driver is a man and the passenger a woman when the women says: "He gave me a little pearl-handled .38 for our first anniversary." This immediate referance to a gun, in juxtaposition with the new knowledge the women is married, and not to the man she is with, immediately raises our suspicions. A sense of menace is established by the mention of the gun.
As the conversation goes on, we learn that the women is running away from her husband: she's worried that her husband is "ill... mentally". The man driving her is an employee of the husband, and confesses to licking the women. The chiaroscuro lighting adds to the sense of realism begun by our entrance into the conversation in media res.
The non-diegetic dies away and were left with the diegetic sound of the windscreen wipers and the car, a louder noise, becomes apparent. Suddenly the women demands that Ray stop the car. We cut to a close up of his foot slamming on the brake and then to the front of the car, screeching to a stop.
The Coens then to a low angle shot from the side of the car we were just in. We see another car pull up behind it, obviously the source of the women's distress. The low-angle shot puts the other car, although small and tatty (with plate hanging off) in a powerfull position. With the distance and the neutral chiaroscuro, we are unable to make out the driver at all.
The Coens noow cut back inside the car, to the same position we were in. Ray ( John Getz) turns slowly aorund to look at the car; this is the first face we see. It is a close up and his face wears an intence, anxious look, indicating danger. The women does not turn, suggesting she knows too well what is behind them. This also continues to keep a key element of her identity mysterious.
We cut back to the second car and there is an uncomfortable pause; the only sound is diegetic, that of the car engines ticking over. The tension is palpable, and the possibillity of imminent confrontation obvious. The city seems to glimmer attractively but distantly, in the background; safety seems a long way away.
Finally we see it begin to move off, presumably because the driver realises that the people he has been tailing have noticed his presence and he cannot therefore continue secretly following them. As it passess the first car we get a medium shot of the car, conforming its tattiness and also showing us the head of the driver: he appears to be wearing a cowboy hat. The car dissappers into the drakness.

Success
We got the green light to go and start filming. We have finished our pitch sheet, screenplay, storyboard, audience research powerpoint, props location and costumes list and shooting schedule/plan.
I will keep you informed with our shooting, the highs and the lows, the good and the bad. Hopefully it'll be a blast working with Ainsely, Kiyan and Salim.

"The Bone Collector" Opening Scene
I watched the opening scene to this movie in our media lesson. This movie stars Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie, it is a 1999 thriller directed by Phillip Noyce.
The opening scene of this film starts of with a montage of pictures, front covers of a book called the "Bone Collector". The lighting and colour is very dark, this mostly due to the fact it is at night. The dark colour also kinda sets the mood.
The camera movement is very shaky, creates a sort of blurry effect. The framing consists of very tight shots in the hospital and the mineshaft. Denzel Washington is the main character in focus through out the opening scene, as soon as he is introduced he starts giving orders this tells the audience he is the main character in the film.
The editing consists of slow motion when Denzel is in the mine shaft and sees the corpse of him, as he crawls up to the dead body it shows him creeping up to da body in slow motion.
The music during the montage fades away effectively in to the sound of helicopters in the night sky and police sirens.

Our Mood Board
http://www.scribd.com/doc/74314661
This is my mood board, it consists of alot dark images of ghosts, and grieving pictures. These kind of pictures represent my character's emotions, the picture of the two trees sort of represent my character (Dhylan Patel) and Ainsley (Tyler Johnson) standing by each other. All the ghost images represent when Tyler haunts Dhylan without him knowing. The pictures with the lonely person sitting alone is a image of my character reminisching his fun time he had with Tyler. The image shows the person all alone, which is what my character goes through: isolation.

"Identity" Opening Scene
I watched the opening scene of 'Identity' on my Sky+, i made notes on various cinematic techniques. While watchin the movie, i made note on how the lighting and colour was very dark. There was only chiaroscuro lighting (the candle is lighting the very dimmly lit room).
The camera pans very slowly, especially over as it pans over the newspaper articles, pictures and the mugshot of the "Malcolm" character.
The framing is very tight, alot of objects are put into the frame, i.e newspapers, notepad, photographs and pens.
The editing is very slow cut, it gives the time for the audience to look at the framing of the shot and get a detailed image of the mugshots and pictures. However it quickens as it gets over the newspaper cut outs and the investigation files.
The sound played through out is the tape played of the interview with "Malcolm" and the Invesigator. There is also diegetic sound of thunder and rain in the background.
The mise-en-scene used through out the opening scene are mostly the various photographs of brutally murdered victims, there is a mugshot of "Malcolm", there are alot of files linked to the investigation, alot of fingerprints on a file....

Loaction
One of our locations is at a cemetry. This is at Streatham Cemetry (taken from google images), my character would be putting the boquet/flowers on his best friends gravestone. Im not 100% sure whether we are going to be using this exact location. We may change it but however right now we are thinking of using this as our location.

Random Ideas
I saw a man on the bus on Saturday while i was on my way home with my friend, he was in an all black suit and a dark grey jacket with a single red rose in his hand. It was quite a warm day that day and i asked my "why is he wearing a jacket for", my friend could not answer my question.
I said to myself in my mind that most people wear black in a funeral and carry a single rose to put on the gravestone og their loved one.
If anyone from my group is reading this than maybe we could dress up my character in the same attire so he looks as if he is serious about his best friends death.

We will be filming one of our scenes in a train station, i have imported this image from google, it is an image of victoria train station in london. We are thinking of doing at Balham or Wandsworth train station.
It would be that my character is going to put the flowers on his best friends grave. My character would be dressed all smart with a boquet of flowers to put on his grave.

The idead so far for my group is the begging of a pshycological thriller in which 2 best friends that grow up together and were very tight and 1 of the friends dies in a traggic death (our group have not decided the cause of death).
The other best-friend (that is played by me) still goes to put flowers on his grave every night or every year (undecided), it turns out that my character is hit very hard by the loss of his best friend, he starts seeing his friends in placec.
This is what we have come up so far as our backbone of the story, there might be sligh changes as we progress through the coursework... thank you for taking the time to read this blog...
